The existence of Bucharest (Bucuresti) was first documented in 1459.
However, the township remained a relatively insignificant urban area for over two centuries.
In 1698, Bucharest became the capital of the Principality of Wallachia
and, as a result, turns into an important commercial and political centre.
One and a half centuries later (1862) Bucharest was designated the capital of Romania
and it began to transform into a true European city,
with elegant buildings, wide boulevards, and theaters.
After World War I, Bucharest became a cosmopolitan city with a vibrant cultural life and architecture reminiscent of Paris.
Hence its nickname: "Little Paris".
The end of World War II brought over four decades of Communist rule to Romania and,
during the second half of the 20th century, the city of Bucharest underwent major changes,
with the construction of grandiose buildings and new neighborhoods,
but also with the destruction of many historic buildings.
Several guided tours are available to visitors who wish to explore,
on foot or by car, Romania's capital city.
